Cantor Josée Wolff

Temple Beth Shalom’s 5780 High Holy Days Cantor

A native of The Netherlands, Cantor Josée Wolff holds a degree in flute from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. In 1991 she received her Masters degree in Sacred Music from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, School of Sacred Music and was the first woman from the European continent to be invested as a cantor. In 2010 Cantor Wolff received her Doctorate of Ministry degree from Hebrew Union College.

Cantor Wolff is an adjunct faculty member at the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music, HUC-JIR in New York and a faculty member of the Abraham Geiger Kolleg in Berlin, Germany. In addition, she serves as part-time cantor at Congregation Emanuel of the Hudson Valley, in Kingston NY.

Previously she was Director of Cantorial Student Placement at HUC-JIR, and Director of the Department of Synagogue Music of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Cantor Wolff has served Reform congregations in the US and Europe for the past 26 years. A past member of the executive board of the American Conference of Cantors, she is a member of the School of Sacred Music Advisory Council and the Joint Cantorial Placement Commission.

Cantor Wolff enjoys leading worship and teaching about synagogue music and worship throughout the Progressive Jewish world. Cantor Wolff has performed at numerous cantorial concerts in the US, South America, Europe, and Israel and was a regularly featured performer at the International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
